Election Night Party at Southern Hospitality NYC by our owner Eytan Sugarman
November 6th, 2008
Last night’s election party at Southern Hospitality was truly a memorable and historic night. I was pleasantly surprised by the massive turnout we had election night, with a line of people literally stretched down to the corner. As I walked into the restaurant around 7pm I saw the line and thought that perhaps the Superbowl or St.Patricks day had come early this year.. To honour the festivities we named a few of our signature dishes after the candidates to add a little fun twist. Political junkies feasted on “Palin’s Hot and Spicy wings”. “The all beef Obama Burger”, “McCain’s Mac and Cheese”, “Biden’s Bite-In ribs” and of course the “Maverick chicken n ribs combo plate”. As the polls came in we handed out complimentary red and blue shots depending upon which party carried the state. My good friend, MTV’s TRL host Damien Fahey and his girlfriend Gracie Mercedes came down to partake in the festivities. I watched them both embrace with tears of joy when their chosen candidate was announced victorious.
My friends Mark Birnbaum, and Eugene Rehm, owners of the Meat Packing disrict’s hot spot TenJune also ventured up town to join us as did my fabulous PR team, Shadow PR, along with other friends. I was asked to do an interview with CNN who was covering us, as the top pick of restaurants to come watch the election. The reporter who was interviewing me asked “..why do you think so many people came out to watch the elections tonight?” I could only answer, “I guess the change is really exciting”. I spoke with my mother earlier in the day, who is a true political afficianado, and I asked her thoughts on the election..She said “well, either way, history will be made tonight..We will either have a Black President or a female Vice-President”..Our co-owner and dear friend Justin Timberlake has been outspoken in his support of President Elect Obama, and really did his part to encourage people to get out and vote. And as John McCain so eloquently said, “The people have spoken”.
Positive change is always an exciting thing. We are honoured that so many people chose Southern Hospitality as their chosen destination to witness this historic event, and we hope that you enjoyed wonderful food, beverage and friendly hospitable service while cheering on your party of choice. And we hope you will come join us again soon, because when you’re at Southern Hospitality, you’re home. As always, we thank you for your support.
